On a falllll-bulous September day, I ventured to St. John’s Church in downtown Denver. Draped in tradition, the brick sanctuary encompassed the beauty of Aileen and Derek’s union. The sounds of Aileen’s bubbly laugh could be heard throughout the halls. Her fiancé, Derek, could be found throwing on his grey dinner jacket and beaming a smile so vivacious it could only be matched by that of his wife-to-be.
The congregation filled up with their favorite people. Aileen being a nurse, invited one very special little friend to witness her vows and take formals with her. Eeeek she is the cutest! Their bond was so precious to watch. And Aileen’s sincere compassion and love for people was evident. Likewise, Derek’s bubbly personality and tenderness were a vivid balance with his wife’s. Together, their guests doted about how they are two sweet people who make an even more sweet couple.
After the I Do’s were declared, and the formals snapped (Eeeek again!), the newlyweds migrated to their reception at the Fritz Knoebel. Indoors, the soft pink hues and pastels matched the historical brick Denver University hall perfectly. Out in the courtyard, guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the courtyard. And Aileen, Derek and me? Well, we were outdoors as well chasing the setting sun. And let me tell you, we were given the gift of a bomb-dot-com (The cool kids still say that, right?) autumn sunset.
Once we danced in the glory of the sun, we rejoined the party. The best part of the reception was when Aileen’s traditional and poised mother hit the dance floor. She got the dance floor hopping and it did not cease!
Now for a little Q & A with the couple:
When and how did you two meet?
We need met through mutual friends.
What is your favorite thing about each other?
We are best friends and enjoy cuddling and spending time together. Sounds kinda lame but it’s true. I hope it stays this way forever.
How did he propose?
He proposed every day since the day I met him but he officially proposed on a trip to Chicago on Navy Pier at sunset. I didn’t take him seriously at first because I was used to him always getting on one knee. 🙂
How did you choose your venue for your day?
We enjoy attending hockey games at Denver University and so we were extremely happy when their venue became available after a cancellation. It was meant to be.
What was the inspiration behind your wedding day?
I tried to reference pictures online and even magazines but each decision we made was some how inspired by each other. Three month planning narrowed down a ton for us so we had to just have faith in the process.
What is one thing you wish you had done for your wedding day?
I wish I had planned for a longer reception. It filled my heart to see everyone dancing and enjoying themselves. I didn’t want it to end.
What was your favorite moment of your wedding day?
Walking down the aisle and seeing my the love of my life waiting for me.
Any advice for future couples about planning for their wedding?
The ceremony is for the couple, the reception is for family and friends. Only invite people who will genuinely celebrate your union together, because it’s not about the quantity of the tables and chairs but the quality sitting at them. It will bless your day even more.
